The aftermath of having a child receive an autism diagnosis can feel like a whirlwind of emotions, as well as a whirlwind of acronyms. Many different acronyms start popping up such as: ASD, DFO, IBI, and ABA. If your child has moderate to severe Autism, your doctor or psychologist may refer you to your regional autism agency to apply for the Autism Intervention Program in Ontario (1-888-284-8340).
The Autism Intervention Program provides support services for parents and funding the child to receive Intensive Behavioural Intervention (IBI). Additional funding for children with mild to severe Autism can be found on the Autism Ontario website. The Autism Intervention Program provides parents with two options for receiving publicly funding IBI services – the latter of which many of our clients choose.
- Direct service option:Children can receive the services directly from trained staff at one of Ontario’s nine regional service providers.
- Direct funding option (DFO): Parents can receive funding directly. The family then arranges for services from a private service provider.
“IBI is a scientifically proven intervention with the goal of increasing the rate of learning for children with autism. When IBI is effective, children show substantial improvement in language, cognitive ability, and adaptive behaviour. Children have different outcomes, with research suggesting 40% to 50% of young children may make substantial progress over a 1 to 2 year period (Toronto Partnership for Autism Services).”
