What is tutoring?
Tutoring at Morneau Shepell’s Children’s Support Solutions is a one-on-one tutoring program uniquely tuned to the academic needs of the individual child. We work on the premise that every child is unique, and understanding that uniqueness is what we do best. The tutors are experienced in helping kids of all abilities, including kids with special needs. At Morneau Shepell, the tutors work to discover a child’s potential and celebrate their difference. Tutoring helps children overcome challenges that get in the way of learning. Tutors tailor the program to the individual’s needs and draw on a wide range of techniques including:
- Differentiated Instruction
- Learning Styles
- Multiple Ways of Knowing
- Visual Prompts
- Graphic Organizers
- Adaptive Technology
Who can benefit from tailored tutoring?
Almost any child can benefit from tutoring; however we typically work with kids who are experiencing difficulties with an aspect of school. We help children in grades 1 to 12, typically focusing on the core academic capabilities such as:
- Reading/reading comprehension
- Creative writing and spelling
- Math and problem solving
- Test preparation, homework support, study skills and organizational skills.
Tutoring goes far beyond teaching content, we address whatever difficulties underlie academic challenges such as anxiety, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), or sensory integration differences.
What role can parents play?
The tutoring program begins with the parents meeting the tutor to talk about their child and their goals. As the tutoring progresses the tutor will reserve some time at the end of sessions to give parents an update on how their child is doing and what they can work on at home.
How does tutoring work?
Each program is tailored to the academic and emotional needs of the individual child. The sessions are one-on-one and last 50 minutes. We are dedicated to establishing strong relationships with each child and making it a fun experience so they want to come back.
How are tutors trained?
The Tutoring program at Morneau Shepell is run by a team of Ontario Certified Teachers and behaviour therapists who have numerous years of experience working with children. They are part of a larger team of experts at Children’s Support Solutions and that depth and breadth of expertise is what differentiates our tutoring program from traditional programs.
Where can I learn more about tutoring?
While there are many books on tutoring in general, parents typically look for materials relevant to the particular differences their child has. Speak to your child’s tutor and they can direct you to relevant resources.
